KUCHING, Aug 17: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has hit back at Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong for repeatedly questioning the State’s cancer centre project, stressing that plans are already in motion and not a matter for political point-scoring.

SUPP Engkilili Branch chairman Kua Jack Seng, who is also the Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, said the Sarawak government has outlined the development plan for the cancer centre, which was even presented at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

“The cancer centre is indeed an urgent need. But the real question is this–when Democratic Action Party (DAP) was part of the federal government, what exactly did Yong and her colleagues do to fight for Sarawak’s healthcare facilities?

“Even when Sarawak General Hospital’s oncology department was overwhelmed and hospital beds were insufficient, where was she then? Or is this simply a case of selective amnesia?” Kua said in a statement today.

He emphasised that the Sarawak government is already in the preparatory phase and moving ahead with necessary processes, while continuing to seek federal funding support.

“What Sarawakians need are builders, not political loudspeakers who repeat the same lines in the newspapers.

“SUPP will continue to push for the cancer centre’s implementation to ensure that Sarawakians receive proper medical facilities, instead of being treated to political theatrics,” he added.

Kua was responding to Yong’s remarks yesterday urging the Sarawak government to provide a clear timeframe for the cancer centre project, which she said should not be delayed further given the pressing needs of patients.

“The government must come out with a concrete timeline and plan to ensure that the cancer centre will be implemented without further delays. This involves lives, and cancer patients cannot afford to wait any longer,” Yong was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today. – DayakDaily
