KUCHING, Feb 20: Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, is confident that with the array of exciting programmes, Sarawak can achieve its target of five million visitors this year.
According to a news report by TVS, Abdul Karim said that Sarawak has successfully achieved an impressive target number of visitors for three consecutive years.
“With all the programmes we have prepared for this year, whether in the tourism sector, music festivals, or sports events, it will help increase the number of visitor arrivals,” he was quoted as saying while speaking at the Chap Goh Mei Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Sarawak Dinner here last night.
He is also confident that with AirBorneo, Sarawak could receive more visitors in the future.
“When AirBorneo starts operating, we expect to increase the number of visitors coming to Sarawak,” he added.
Sarawak had already attracted 400,531 tourists in January alone.
According to ministry data, Sarawak welcomed 233,404 foreign visitors in January 2025, while the remaining 167,127 were domestic tourists.
Abdul Karim had also pointed out the importance of close cooperation between government and industry stakeholders, such as Matta, to ensure sustainable tourism development.
“Through cooperation, hard work, and innovation, we have seen positive progress in increasing visitor arrivals and diversifying tourism products. It has also strengthened Sarawak’s brand as a major tourist destination,” he was reported as saying.
Aside from that, he said the Sarawak government remains committed to enhancing tourism infrastructure, creating new and exciting experiences, and embracing digital innovations to meet the growing needs of travellers. – DayakDaily
