Sarawak, Brunei review progress of cross-border power interconnection project

KUCHING, July 16: The progress of the electricity interconnection project between Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam was among the key issues discussed during a meeting between Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Brunei Darussalam’s Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato Seri Setia Erywan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Mohd Yusof today.

The two leaders met in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, exchanging views on a range of matters of mutual interest while reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the long-standing relationship between Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam.

According to a statement, both sides reviewed the progress of the electricity interconnection project, which is regarded as a strategic initiative to enhance energy security and improve the resilience of power supply systems in the region.

Awang Tengah said discussions and engagements among the relevant parties have been progressing well, expressing hope that ongoing negotiations would achieve positive outcomes in the near future.

He also voiced confidence that cooperation in the energy sector would create opportunities for stronger economic ties between Sarawak and Brunei while supporting the sustainable development agendas of both parties.

The meeting also touched on border-related issues, which continue to be addressed through close cooperation and mutual understanding between the relevant agencies on both sides.

Awang Tengah expressed appreciation to Erywan for the meeting, noting that the close relationship between Sarawak and Brunei provides a strong foundation for expanding cooperation that benefits both the people and the regional economy.

In addition, Sarawak reiterated its readiness to share its experience and expertise in renewable energy development, including offering opportunities for interested Bruneians to gain experience and pursue careers in the hydroelectric and green energy sectors through Sarawak Energy.

Awang Tengah said he hoped several matters currently under negotiation could be finalised before the next meeting of leaders from both sides, enabling agreed areas of cooperation to be implemented more swiftly.

He stressed that Sarawak remains committed to strengthening its friendship and strategic partnership with Brunei Darussalam across various sectors, including trade, investment, energy and regional development, for the mutual benefit of both sides. — DayakDaily
