KUCHING, Dec 12: The Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) will not be distributed in cash but credited into Sarawak Pay (SPay) accounts.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that this approach aims to ensure that the targeted groups can efficiently access essential goods.
“The Sarawak government’s current policy, including SKAS, focuses on ensuring that every household, particularly the B40 (lower income) and M40 (middle income), has food on the table.
“This assistance will not come in cash. Instead, funds will be credited to SPay accounts and restricted for purchasing essential items like rice, cooking oil, and other necessities,” he explained during a Special Interview on Post Budget Sarawak 2025 aired on TVS last night (Dec 11).
Abang Johari revealed that SKAS is expected to benefit approximately 800,000 residents, with RM460 million allocated for the initiative.
“This approach ensures the aid serves its purpose. In some cases, cash handouts may be used for other purposes. Countries like Singapore also employ similar methods,” he said.
Additionally, he stated that grocery stores, including those in rural areas, will be registered as SPay merchants to ensure recipients can easily access the essential goods.
“This initiative not only helps alleviate the cost of living but also strengthens local economic support systems,” he added. — DayakDaily
