KUCHING, July 20: RM60 million has been allocated by the Sarawak government to build a 700-metre-long breakwater at Tanjung Manat as a long-term measure to address increasingly severe coastal erosion at Belawai Beach, while protecting residential areas, privately owned land, and public facilities in the area.
Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the high-impact project is urgently needed due to the worsening coastal erosion in Belawai.
To emphasise his point, he said that an area of land opposite Belawai is estimated to have been eroded by about 500 metres towards the sea.
“The construction of the breakwater is expected to reduce the impact of large waves, which are the main cause of the erosion, while ensuring that residents’ land and various public facilities remain protected.
“This effort demonstrates the state government’s commitment to protecting coastal areas from the threat of erosion, while ensuring the long-term well-being of the local community,” he said when officiating the GP Belawai Series 1/2026 in Belawai on Sunday (July 19), as reported by TVS.
Meanwhile, he said that the RM161 million Belawai Waterfront upgrading project is now in the final stage of design preparation before moving into the implementation phase.
The two-kilometre project covers the area from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) office to Kampung Belawai, where various recreational facilities, landscaping, and public infrastructure will be developed to transform the area into a more attractive leisure and tourism destination.
He also said plans to develop a golf course and a hotel in Belawai are expected to catalyse the growth of the tourism sector, create new employment opportunities, and stimulate local economic activities. — DayakDaily
