GEDONG, July 26: The Sarawak government has approved an immediate allocation of RM15 million to rebuild the collapsed Gedong riverbank near Kampung Segera Jaya, which has affected five homes in the area.

In a TVS news report, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the five affected families will be relocated to a designated resettlement area, with government assistance provided to construct new homes.

“The collapse is believed to have been caused by activities that compromised the structural integrity of the riverbank. The government will provide a new site and rebuild homes for the five families involved, but not at the original location,” he said during a visit to the site today.

He added that the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak will undertake the riverbank reconstruction, with works expected to commence soon.

Abang Johari, who is also the Gedong assemblyman, said a special meeting will be convened with local leaders, including the Premier’s special representative in Gedong Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais and Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee, to formulate a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the affected area.

“Gedong is a traditional village that once had only a footbridge. Although a road has since been built, it remains narrow and limits emergency access. Therefore, we will review and reassess the entire village development plan,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Abang Johari also witnessed the Men’s 25-Paddle Bidar Sprint Final at the Gedong Regatta, held in conjunction with the upcoming Gedong Festival 2025, where competitors vied for the Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais Trophy.

His visit follows an initial inspection conducted by Rodiyah and Naroden on July 13, which revealed severe erosion leading to land subsidence, cracked homes, and tilted streetlamps, posing significant safety risks to residents. — DayakDaily
