KUCHING, Oct 31: Sarawak is strategically positioning itself as a key player in green energy within the Asean region by advancing Sarawak Energy’s initiatives.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised the State’s commitment to diversifying its renewable energy portfolio to enhance green energy generation.

“We are not only focused on Petros (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad in the oil and gas sector), but also on Sarawak Energy (in efforts to harness renewable resources),”

“These two directions will enable Sarawak to play a significant role in the regional economy in this part of the world,” he stated during Petros’ 7th anniversary celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night (Oct 30), which was broadcasted live via Ukas Channel.

Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak is expanding its energy production beyond hydropower to include hydrogen, solar, blue gas, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from microalgae, among others.

“We are now exploring the potential of harnessing energy from the ocean through Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology,” he said.

With Sarawak’s advantage of a relatively shallow continental shelf, this technology utilises the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and colder deep seawater through specialised engines, offering a sustainable energy solution with minimal environmental impact.

“This will enhance our renewable portfolio and bolster green power generation. If we generate seven gigawatts (GW), the excess can be shared with our neighbours, establishing Sarawak as a hub for green energy,” he added.

Sarawak Energy Berhad is the largest renewable energy producer in Malaysia, with a target of achieving 10 GW of renewable energy by 2030, predominantly from hydropower, solar, gas turbines, and biomass.

The hydropower facilities already provide clean, reliable energy, supporting local industries while enabling power exports.

Since 2010, Sarawak has significantly increased its renewable energy capacity, growing more than fourfold to reach 5,745 megawatts (MW) in 2023. This growth has resulted in a remarkable 73 per cent reduction in grid emissions, underscoring Sarawak’s dedication to achieving net-zero emissions and advancing the green economy.
