Saratok UM student Janting Tingom wins top Science & Tech Award at Malaysia’s largest Final Year Project festival

KUCHING, June 27: Janting Tingom, a proud native of Saratok and final-year student at Universiti Malaya’s (UM) Faculty of Engineering, has made history by emerging as the champion in the Science & Technology category at UG i-Fest 2025 held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

UG i-Fest 2025 — Malaysia’s first and largest Final Year Project (FYP) festival — brought together over 2,600 projects from 16 faculties across Universiti Malaya, cementing its status as the nation’s premier innovation platform for graduating students and marking a milestone in Malaysian higher education.

According to a media release today, Janting’s award-winning project, titled “Performance Evaluation of Palm Oil Clinker (POC) Powder as an Additive in Warm Mix Asphalt Design”, explores the innovative use of palm oil industry waste as a sustainable, cost-effective additive in road construction.

His research was supervised by Dr Suhana Koting, a Universiti Malaya lecturer and fellow Sarawakian, whose guidance helped bring the project to national acclaim.

For this outstanding achievement, Janting received RM3,000 in cash and a full scholarship to pursue his Master’s degree at Universiti Malaya.

This victory is not only a personal milestone for Janting but a shared moment of pride for Sarawakians everywhere. — DayakDaily
