KUCHING, Nov 23: A search and rescue operation was launched for a 53-year-old man in Tanjung Manis after he failed to return home from foraging for forest products.

The man was identified as Beliang Ajak from Kampung Berangan Paloh.

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre today, they were alerted regarding the missing man at 6.35pm on Wednesday (Nov 22) and deployed firefighters from Bomba Tanjung Manis together with Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to the location.

Based on event chronology, witnesses said that the man went outnalone on Nov 22 to a nearby forest in Umek/Selayar in Sungai Batang Paloh, which is about 30 minutes from his longhouse.

Realising that the man who normally returned home in the afternoon, had not return, his wife then requested assistance from local residents to look out for him.

At 3pm, about 20 local villagers went searching for the missing man at the area which he was believed to be, but failed to find any trace of him until 5pm.

Following that, Bomba together with Sarawak Coastguard and the local villages launched a search and rescue operation today to continue searching for the missing man. — DayakDaily
