TANJUNG MANIS, Oct 26: The RM50.25 million Spun Pile and Pole Factory in Tanjung Manis is expected to create jobs, expand opportunities for local businesses, and strengthen Sarawak’s industrial supply chain, said caretaker Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Awang Tengah, who is also chairman of the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), said the investment reflects confidence in Sarawak’s economic potential and supports efforts to strengthen the manufacturing sector and expand downstream industries.
“The success of an investment should not be measured by its value or production capacity alone, but also by its ability to create economic value, employment and business opportunities for local companies,” he said in a press release.
He added that technology transfer, knowledge-sharing and workforce development were essential to ensuring that investments delivered long-term benefits to local communities.
The factory, developed by PMW Winabumi (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd on a 29-acre site along the Rejang River, will manufacture prestressed concrete products for the construction, infrastructure, and utilities sectors.
It is designed to produce 10,683 tonnes of spun piles and poles monthly, with operations targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027 and full production expected by early 2028.
The project is expected to create around 160 direct jobs, with priority given to nearby communities. More than 50 per cent of materials are also targeted to be sourced locally, creating potential opportunities for Sarawakian suppliers, contractors and supporting businesses.
Awang Tengah said Tanjung Manis had strong potential to develop further as an industrial and economic centre supporting Central Sarawak.
He stressed that stronger collaboration among the government, investors, local enterprises, and technical institutions would be key to building local capabilities and creating quality employment.
Sarawak recorded RM11.2 billion in approved investments across the primary, manufacturing, and services sectors in the first half of 2026, with domestic investments accounting for 61 per cent.
The factory’s products are expected to support infrastructure projects involving utilities, telecommunications, highways, bridges and ports, including the Pan Borneo Highway and Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR). — DayakDaily
