KUCHING, April 2: The Sarawak Association of Maritime Industries’ (Samin) publication of 1,500 books titled “Sarawak Maritime Industry: A Catalyst for Growth” is by far the biggest project it has ever undertaken.

Samin president Dr Renco Yong said the project was most challenging against the backdrop of a modest budget and amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, he said Samin strived to position itself as the ‘go-to centre’ for those interested in obtaining information about Sarawak’s marine industry.

“Thanks to the support of the Sarawak government, our members, committee or council, project partners and industry stakeholders, we managed to pull through and publish the book.

“We will build on this success and update the book from time to time and even come up with other publications such as newsletter or bulletin showcasing Sarawak’s marine industry,” he said in a statement today.

Touching on policies, Yong said Samin has always lobbied very actively in seeking stronger implementation of the cabotage policy to protect the interests of local shipyards and marine industry in general.

“We have been a strong advocate of strict application of the policy to ensure that the interests of local players in shipping, shipbuilding or ship repair and supporting activities are protected.

“With a judicious implementation of the cabotage policy, we believe that local companies can compete on a level playing field with bigger international companies, without compromising on product or service quality and the entrepreneurial and competitive spirit,” he said.

He vowed that Samin would continue to look out for the interest of local marine industry companies by pushing for stricter implementation of the cabotage policy. — Dayakdaily
