Samalaju incinerator explosion caused by overflow of molten material

KUCHING, Nov 18: No casualties or injuries were reported in the Samalaju incinerator blast yesterday (Nov 17).

In clarifying this, OM Materials Sarawak Sdn Bhd in a press statement today said that the incident which occurred at 1.30pm was caused by overflow of molten material from a casting mold which resulted in a localised explosion at the furnace workshop.

ā€œEmergency response protocols were immediately activated and all personnel within the affected area were safely evacuated to pre-designated zones.

ā€œThe damage sustained was minor and operations are expected to resume with minimal disruption,ā€ it said.

The company also gave assurance it prioritises the safety of its employees and contractors as well as surrounding communities.

It added that further updates will be provided following availability of information as the investigation progresses.
