KUCHING, April 20: The Salvation Army Kuching Corps & Community Services is appealing to the public to contribute construction tools and essential items to assist 166 victims of a fire that destroyed a 33-door Rh Peter Mujan in Betong, Sri Aman on March 31, leaving them without shelter and in urgent need of assistance.
Corps officer Captain Raymond Rubi Aloba said the community has asked for construction tools to speed up the process of building the temporary shelter, as well as dry groceries and other necessities to tie them in for the next few months as their financial situation is unstable.
The Salvation Army Kuching Corps & Community Services are currently planning their second trip to support the fire survivors, following the first round of emergency relief delivery on April 11.
“Understandably, the community from Rh Peter Mujan are still recovering from the sudden loss of their home. They are currently housed at a multipurpose hall, but they will need to evacuate by April 30.
“A temporary land has been provided for them to build a temporary shelter, while they await approval for a permanent location and application for financial assistance. The breadwinners are small-scale farmers who are now unable to work as they prepare a temporary longhouse for the families,” Captain Aloba said in a statement today.
In the first round of emergency relief deliveries, they have brought along items for distribution to the community that included school bags, stationeries, mini portable gas stoves, double non-stick gas stoves, clothing, groceries, personal care products and a wheelchair.
The Salvation Army Kuching Corps & Community Services are currently seeking kind-hearted individuals and corporations to urgently donate the following items to the people:
1. 33 sets of the following construction tools such as wheelbarrow, hammer, pail, spade, and hoe
2. Dry groceries (rice, noodles, cooking oil, canned food, biscuits, etc)
3. Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc)
4. Personal care products (sanitary pads, adult diapers)
5. 66 sets of mosquito netting (double size)
All items must be in good condition and delivered to The Salvation Army Kuching Corps & Community Services at Sekama Road by April 28.
