KUCHING, July 26: A salesman was sentenced to either pay a fine of RM800 or serve 14 days in jail by the Magistrate’s Court today after pleading guilty to filing a false police report claiming that his employer’s RM10,000 cash had been stolen.
Sim Ming Kuang, 33, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan after being charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to 6 months, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Sim was accused of making the false report at the Batu 10 police station in Padawan at about 4.47am on May 28, 2022.
The facts of the case revealed that the accused had reported to the police that his bag, containing his employer’s RM10,000 cash and personal documents, had been stolen.
However, the investigation revealed that the report was fabricated for personal gain, and the alleged theft never occurred.
Additionally, the police investigation concluded that the accused committed the offense of providing false information to a public servant to avoid compensating his employer for the lost money.
It was further discovered that the accused had used a portion of the money to repay a debt to his friend.
The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused chose not to be represented by legal counsel. — DayakDaily
