KUCHING, April 29: A 15-year-old student of a secondary school at Jalan Bakam, Miri, has been designated the index case of a new Covid-19 cluster after the virus was detected in 16 more students.

It is believed that they contracted Covid-19 after they participated in a gotong-royong (communal cleaning) activity organised by the school and prayer meetings held in the hostel.

According to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) statement today, the index case tested positive for the virus on April 19.

The infection was spread through the gotong-royong activity conducted by the school on April 5. SDMC believed that it was also spread through prayer meetings organised by the school for boarders.

This cluster known as the Sains Bakam Cluster and is classified as an educational institution cluster.

Following the student being detected positive for Covid-19, a total of 464 individuals in the school have undergone Covid-19 screening tests.

Of the 464 individuals, 16 tested positive while the results of 373 individuals came back negative for the virus.

The other 74 individuals are still waiting for their laboratory results to be returned. — DayakDaily
