KUCHING, June 26: Sabah and Sarawak have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation in a more structured and formalised manner to accelerate Borneo’s development through coordinated efforts across key sectors, including road infrastructure, utilities, ports, logistics, and industrial development.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, who is also Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Datuk Ewon Benedick said the initiative will begin with coordination at the senior officer level between relevant ministries in both regions, serving as the first step towards more effective implementation of joint programmes.

He said the close relationship between Sabah and Sarawak is vital, as both regions complement each other in terms of resources, infrastructure capacity, and economic potential that can be harnessed for the benefit of the wider Borneo region.

“Sabah needs Sarawak, and Sarawak also needs Sabah to ensure Borneo develops more effectively through stronger cooperation,” he said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news.

He added that both sides have agreed to formalise collaboration starting at the senior administrative level.

He highlighted this to the press after paying a courtesy call on Deputy Premier, who is also Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at Wisma Sumber Alam today.

Ewon added that discussions also focused on strengthening industrial cooperation, particularly in areas where both regions are closely linked through supply chains and shared development needs.

He also noted that logistics coordination and cross-border movement of goods were discussed, including the potential use of Sepanggar Port as a strategic route for transporting construction materials to northern Sarawak.
