KUCHING, Oct 1: Several roads in Kuching city will be temporarily closed in stages from Oct 2 to 12 to facilitate preparations, rehearsals, and official events in conjunction with the 79th birthday celebration of the Governor of Sarawak.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the highlight of the programme, the parade and grand assembly, will take place on Oct 11 from 7am to 12pm at Padang Merdeka, followed by a People’s Concert later that evening.
Road closures will begin on Oct 2 at Jalan McDougall to allow the installation of tents and event preparations, with dismantling scheduled after the festivities conclude on Oct 12.
From Oct 6 to 8, partial closures will affect Jalan McDougall, the RTM traffic light junction and slip road to Padang Merdeka, Jalan Wawasan to Padang Merdeka, and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg (Carpenter Street) for parade rehearsals.
A full-dress rehearsal on Oct 9 will see extended closures including Jalan McDougall, Jalan Wawasan, Jalan Main Bazaar to Lebuh Temple, Lebuh Temple to Lebuh Wayang (Wisma Pelita), Lebuh Wayang to Jalan Main Bazaar, and Jalan Gambier to Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
“Members of the public are advised not to park along road shoulders at these areas and are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance by using alternative routes to avoid congestion,” Alexson said in a statement today.
He added that any enquiries can be directed to the Kuching District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at 082-259900.
