RMAF deploys CN 235 aircraft in search for 8 missing individuals on fishing trip

KUCHING, Nov 2: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has deployed a CN 235 aircraft to assist in the search for eight individuals reported missing after a fishing trip off the coast.

In a statement today, Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak director First Admiral (Maritime) Kamal Ariffin Jusoh confirmed that a report on the incident was received at 5 pm on Nov 1.

The missing individuals, comprising three boat crew members and five fishermen, had not returned as expected from their fishing trip on Oct 31 at 2pm.

“Following the report, a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched, initially covering an area of 100 square nautical miles. On the second day, the search area was expanded to 533.80 square nautical miles,” he stated.

The public with any information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Maritime Sarawak Operation Centre (MRSC) Kuching at 082-432006 or by dialing 999.

The missing individuals — Husin Ayub, 67; Samarin Sharkawi, 33; Mohamad Haikal  Sharkawi, 17; Mohd Azizi Hamzi, 17; Dahlan Ramli, 41; Hasrin Ismail, 53; Johari Bujang, 51 and Abdullah Ajek, 56 — departed from Samariang Batu Jetty at 9 am on Oct 31. — DayakDaily
