SERIAN, Feb 9: The Serian Conference Centre costing RM87 million is now 94.18 per cent complete.
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), construction is expected to be fully completed by March 22 this year.
Once in operation, the conference centre can accommodate more than 1,000 people at any one time.
During a visit to inspect the progress of the centre’s construction, Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada expressed hope that the project contractor will be able to complete the facility as scheduled.
“I am happy with the progress and hopefully it will be ready before Gawai,” he said when contacted by DayakDaily today.
However, Dr Simon pointed out his concerns on identifying a management team to manage and maintain the facility as funding will be required.
“I have requested the Resident Office to start identifying a management team to take care of the facility and perhaps, they can adopt the BCCK (Borneo Convention Centre Kuching) management concept.
“The conference centre has good potential. The management team will need to do marketing,” he said.
On another concern, Dr Simon added that the short-term set back is Serian does not have enough hotels to support large events, given that the conference centre can accommodate more than 1,000 people.
