BAU, Oct 28: SMK Lake has received a RM78.8 million redevelopment featuring 42 classrooms, hostel accommodation for 300 students and other facilities.

Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia deputy director-general (Building Sector) Dato Ir Suhaili Mansor explained that the project, which began in January 2023, was implemented in two phases to allow teaching and learning to continue throughout construction.

“The implementation was arranged in two phases to enable teaching and learning to continue in the old buildings while construction of the new buildings was underway,” he said at the project handover ceremony at SMK Lake, Bau, today.

The Certificate of Partial Occupation (CPO) for Phase 1 was issued on Aug 17, 2026.

He noted that adopting a design-and-build approach required close coordination among contractors, consultants and school management to minimise disruption to daily school operations.

“Clear communication is important so that both parties understand the planned activities and matters requiring joint attention,” he stressed.

He also underscored the importance of accountability in addressing construction issues, with clear responsibilities and follow-up measures needed to ensure their resolution.

“An issue must have a responsible party, clear action and follow-up until its resolution can be confirmed,” he emphasised.

Reflecting on the project, Suhaili highlighted its value in improving the planning and coordination of future developments at schools and other premises that must remain operational during construction.

“The experience will serve as a reference for refining work sequencing and coordination methods for similar projects,” he added. — DayakDaily
