KUCHING, Sept 4: RM75,000 was raised during a satellite shave held at YelaoShr Saradise today in conjunction with the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) GoBald event held at YelaoShr Saradise today.

“The funds raised exceeded the learning centre’s target of RM50,000. The overall campaign saw participation and support from more than 250 teachers, staff, parents, students, and donors, with about 35 supporting the event physically at its learning centre in Saradise,” it said in a statement.

The event, initiated by YelaoShr Saradise, is in conjunction with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM), happening throughout September.

Meanwhile, SCCS president Rodney Wong said GoBald is SCCS’s prominent awareness campaign held annually to keep the conversation going on the roles government agencies, corporations, private sectors, non-profit organisations (NGOs), schools, and individuals play in progressing greater access to caring for the childhood cancer community in Sarawak and Malaysia.

“In keeping this discourse going, we need leaders, role models, movers, and shakers with the ability to nurture and educate to set an example for the younger generation on the importance of showing up for children their age with cancer to improve treatment and outcomes of childhood cancer,” he said.

The all-female team of teachers at YelaoShr Saradise went bald at a satellite shave today.

Out of the ten YelaoShr Saradise participants who went bald, five were female teachers, followed by three parents, one family member, and a 10-year-old girl.

The event was also supported by salon partner Maison Monica Hair & Beauty Academy.

Funds from GoBald will support SCCS’s annual operating expenses of about RM1.5 million to ensure children diagnosed with cancer have access to the treatment and care they need.
