KUCHING, Nov 3: The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) is targeting 500 participants and at least RM25,000 in fundraising through its 3KM Childhood Cancer Awareness Walk 2026 at Kuching Waterfront on Nov 7.

Starting at 6pm, the walk is part of SCCS’ Light It Up Gold campaign for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, following its postponement in September due to the haze.

“It aims to raise awareness of childhood cancer and to stand alongside children, adolescents and families affected by childhood cancer.

“It is also one of the fundraising initiatives that help SCCS continue its mission,” it said in a statement today.

SCCS provides assistance through five pillars of care: emotional support, accommodation at its Halfway Home in Kuching, financial and medical assistance, education, and recreational activities for children and their families.

SCCS said medical assistance remained its biggest area of need, with more than RM2 million channelled to 59 patients in 2025, compared to less than RM1 million in 2024.

Of the amount, more than RM1.7 million went towards specialised medical assistance, including bone marrow transplants, laboratory tests, prostheses and other medical procedures, while about RM280,000 was spent on medical consumables.

One of the children currently receiving SCCS support is one-year-old Ainul Samiyah Zambori from Sadong Jaya, Asajaya, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in June this year.

Ainul requires a bone marrow transplant due to a high-risk mutation affecting her condition. As neither of her siblings is a suitable match, her father will donate his stem cells through a haploidentical transplant.

The procedure is estimated to cost about RM58,000 and will require the family to travel to West Malaysia, with SCCS currently provides the family with RM450 in monthly financial assistance.

“Cases like Ainul’s are why we organise fundraising events like this,” said SCCS president Mary Kiu Ai Ling.

She said every RM50 registration could make a meaningful difference when combined with contributions from the wider community, helping SCCS sustain its support and ensure children do not miss out on necessary treatment due to their families’ financial circumstances.

Participants can register online at https://getbiib.com/events/1746 until Nov 6, with each registration costing RM50.

Those who registered earlier but missed the walk pack collection, as well as new registrants, may contact SCCS at 011-3927 6553 to arrange collection at its centre in Desa Wira.

SCCS welcomes members of the public to take part in the walk, encouraging the community to stay active while helping raise awareness of childhood cancer.

The society also expressed its appreciation to its event partners, including City Joggers Club, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), GaoGao Group, Tea FM and St John Ambulance Sarawak, as well as event sponsor Go Beyond.

Further information is available through SCCS’ official social media channels and website, or by calling or WhatsApping 011-3927 6553. Organisations interested in CSR partnerships may email em1@sccs.org.my. — DayakDaily
