KUCHING, Oct 18: RM65 million has been allocated by the Sarawak government to develop the Sabal Forest Reserve into a research, wellness, and recreational hub by 2028, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking during the launch of the Sabal Forest Reserve as an Eco-Tourism Hub and Sabal Open Day 2025 in Simunjan today, which was broadcast live by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the Premier said the project is expected to commence next year and is scheduled to be completed by 2028.
“The funds are already there; all documentation has been done—we only need to develop it. I asked (Forest Department Sarawak director) Datu Hamden Mohammad if he could speed up (the development).
“This is because by next year, AirBorneo will be operating, and we can bring in visitors from ASEAN so they can see what we have done, especially in our efforts to contain climate change,” he said.
At the same time, he also noted Sabal’s strategic location between Kuching and Sri Aman, which is also along the Pan Borneo Highway.
“It’s not far from Kuching either, so people from the city who want to go on short family trips—not just to Damai or Telok Melano—can now also come here. I see great potential, which is why I approved RM65 million for its development.
“By 2028, I hope to see the necessary facilities completed for people to enjoy recreation and relaxation here,” he said.
He also added that the facilities will support research, recreational activities, and modern infrastructure—all of which are expected to attract visitors, making it crucial to provide the necessary facilities to cater to their needs.
“We must have the facilities—water, power, and food. Maybe we can plant fruit trees that can provide natural produce,” he said.
In addition to Hamden, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak, Datu Len Talif Salleh, was also among those present. — DayakDaily
