MIRI, Oct 7: Local fishermen at Kampung Luak and Kampung Lusut can now operate more safely and comfortably with the completion of a RM300,000 boat jetty at the Kampung Luak Fishermen’s Market, which can accommodate up to 16 fishing boats.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the project, which began on July 16 under the 2026 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), facilitates boat movements, supports fishing activities and enhances fishermen’s safety.
“Kampung Luak Fishermen’s Market is not only an important location for fishermen to carry out their daily activities, but is also closely connected to the lives of the local community.
“Therefore, improving basic facilities in this area is important to enhance the fishermen’s operating environment and support community development,” he said during a visit to the completed project site today, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Ting, who is also Piasau assemblyman, said he would continue working with Miri City Council (MCC) and relevant agencies to ensure the facility is properly maintained and utilised.
He said infrastructure projects under the RTP would continue to be implemented to meet the needs of the local community. — DayakDaily
