KUCHING, June 6: A senior local trader in Padawan has lost over RM250,000 after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scam that promised high returns within a short period.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata confirmed that a police report was lodged by the victim, a woman in her 60s, who operates a business in Padawan.
According to initial investigations, the victim came across an investment advertisement by an alleged international company while browsing Facebook in mid-February 2025.
“Attracted by the offer, she contacted the administrator of the investment group and was convinced to participate after being promised lucrative profits.
“She was then instructed to download an application called ‘Mycdtl’ to begin investing. Believing the scheme to be legitimate, the victim made several online transactions in stages to a bank account provided by the suspect. The total amount transferred was approximately RM250,000,” Mancha said in a statement today.
The scam was uncovered when the victim attempted to withdraw her supposed profits but was unable to do so.
Instead, the suspect demanded additional payments from her before she could access the “commission” from her investment.
Realising she had been duped, the victim immediately filed a police report. — DayakDaily
