KUCHING, May 9: The Sarawak government has launched the Julau Water Supply Project Package 1, worth RM25.7 million, to address the long-standing water supply issues in the area.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will benefit over 3,000 residents.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the project reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that rural communities, particularly in Julau, receive a consistent and quality supply of clean water.
The project involves the construction of a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 3.4 million litres per day, intake points for raw water, a pump station, and the installation of 28 kilometres of piping.
It is intended to upgrade the current water supply system, which is no longer able to meet growing demand.
“Access to clean water is a fundamental right for every citizen, and the Sarawak government is determined to resolve this issue promptly.
“I urge the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) to remain attentive to public complaints and community needs to ensure improved water supply in this area,” he said during a working visit to the Julau Water Treatment Plant on Tuesday (May 6).
Meanwhile, Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin also voiced his concern over the prolonged water supply issues in Julau.
“The water supply issue in Julau has dragged on for too long and has significantly affected residents.
“I hope this project will be a long-term solution and bring benefits to all parties involved,” he said. — DayakDaily
