KUCHING, July 14: PGA Sarawak seized smuggled goods estimated to be worth a total of RM238,200 in an ‘Op Libas’ raid carried out in Bau yesterday afternoon.
Based on tip-offs, a team comprising personnel from PGA Batallion 11 and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) Sarawak raided the premises at 1.20pm.
“A total of 513 cartons of white cigarettes, 300 cartons of kretek cigarettes and 400 crates of alcohol drinks were found in the premises,” General Operations Force (PGA) Sarawak Commanding Officer Supt Rosdi Inai revealed in a press statement.
“The premises’ owner failed to show the necessary documents for having these items as well.”
According to Rosdi, the team also arrested a 39-year-old man for attempting to bribe the officers by offering RM3,000 to prevent the items for being confiscated.
“Based on trusted sources, it was believed that the items were being smuggled in from a neighbouring country and will be marketed in Kuching and Bau,” Rosdi added.
The case had been handed over to the Bau police to be investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967 while the suspect who attempted to bribe will be investigated under the SPRM Act. — DayakDaily
