KUCHING, July 14: Sessions Court sentenced an administrative assistant to 18 months and 10 strokes of the rotan for misappropriating RM218,163.86 belonging to a secondary school in Simunjan.

Mohd Hasbullah Salleh, 31, pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him before a judge.

The accused, as an administrative assistant of the school, was entrusted to keep the cheque books for bank accounts and other documents belonging to the school.

The school has three different accounts and the funds that the accused had committed criminal breach of trust were under the fund for the school hostel where the allocation was from the Ministry of Education for the purchase of food and beverages for the students living in the school hostel.

The accused misappropriated the money belonging to the school from the year 2015 to 2017.

Upon investigation, it was found that the accused had forged the signature of the signatories on the cheque and deposited it to a company belonging to his friend.

The accused also borrowed his friend’s company’s business license under the pretext of supplying school needs at Simunjan but investigations revealed that the cheque deposited to the company belonging to his friend was cashed out and an unspecified amount of the cash was later given to the accused.
