RM202K worth of contraband cigarettes confiscated

Police officers seen inspecting the contraband cigarettes worth a total of RM202,000 after it was handed over to the IPD Padawan.

KUCHING, June 11: A total of 1,124 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM202,000 was confiscated by the police during Op Libas, yesterday.

According to Sarawak General Operations Force (PGA) deputy commander ACP Hakemal Hawari in a statement, a team of police carried out an inspection at a premise located at Jalan Tapang in Kota Sentosa Commercial, at 5.10pm, on June 10, 2020.

He said the operation was led by officer ASP Norman Chendan Philip Picha Rumpang, together with 10 other officers from Sarawak PGA Brigade, including four from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak branch.


“As a result of the inspection, a total of 1,044 cartons of regular cigarettes (208,800 sticks) with the value of RM187,920, together with 80 cartons of kretek cigarettes (12,800 sticks) worth RM14,080, was found and believed to be without tax,” he said.

Hakemal stated that the confiscated contraband cigarettes were handed over to Padawan police headquarters for further investigation and action.

“The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967,” he added.–DayakDaily
