SIBU, Feb 2: An allocation of RM2.5 million has been proposed to upgrade Jalan Ling Kai Cheng in Sibu, says Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.
According to him, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to include it in the disaster recovery project under the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
Tiang, who is also the assemblyman for Pelawan, said that the road has been inaccessible for a few days due to the flood.
“That road is vital as it is the main road for residents at Sungai Merah and Sungai Biduk—at least 7,000 residents were affected due to the road being inaccessible.
“We will upgrade the areas affected by the floods as soon as possible to avoid unwanted incidents during the floods and to ensure smooth traffic flow,” he said during his Chinese New Year open house today attended by Abang Johari, according to TVS.
Yesterday (Feb 1), on the same road (Jalan Ling Kai Cheng), a 53-year-old man was feared to have drowned after his four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle plunged into a flooded drain.
Fortunately, the victim, Wong Sing Ang, was reported to be safe as he managed to escape from the vehicle.
Additionally, former Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang highlighted oversight on safety measures due to the lack of signposts or barriers around drains at all flood-prone locations, which included Jalan Ling Kai Cheng. — DayakDaily
