MIRI, Dec 4: The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak has proposed the immediate construction of a 200-metre-long seawall for the Lutong Beach area near Taman Bayshore, which is highly vulnerable to large wave impacts.
In a report by TVS, Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin revealed that the project is estimated to cost RM2.2 million.
“Recently, the existing seawall was struck by waves and has collapsed. It is no longer functional.
“We must urgently build a stronger seawall using large block stones capable of withstanding the waves. The new seawall will not only protect the road but also safeguard the nearby Taman Bayshore residential area,” he said during a press conference following a meeting on flood preparedness for Miri today.
In response to the potential risk of flooding, a task force has been established, combining efforts from the Public Works Department (JKR) Miri, the DID Miri Division, and the Miri City Council (MCC).
Lee emphasised that these three agencies will oversee the drainage systems in Miri.
“One key measure to prevent flooding is that these agencies, through their task force, are conducting inspections of all drainage systems under their care. If any blockages or overgrowths, such as grasses, are found, immediate action will be taken.
“We do not want flooding caused by clogged drains or overgrown vegetation, especially in large drains. Prompt action is essential,” he explained.
Additionally, the agencies will monitor high-risk areas, including Canada Hill, a known zone where erosion has occurred in the past.
Lee also noted that the Miri, Subis, Marudi, Beluru, and Telang Usan District Disaster Management Committees (DDMC) have been instructed to be prepared for any disaster events. — DayakDaily
