RM18.68 mln Integrated River Basin Devt Project Sg S’wak Package 1 to mitigate floods in Kota Samarahan

KUCHING, May 25: The Integrated River Basin Development Project (PLSB) Sungai Sarawak (Package 1) commenced today with a groundbreaking ceremony aimed at upgrading the drainage systems at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Muara Tuang, the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway, and the deepening and widening of Sungai Tabuan.

According to Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim, who officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony, the project is a major initiative to mitigate flash floods in Kota Samarahan.

“The project cost for Package 1 is as much as RM18.68 million and will be implemented by the contractor Edaran Venture Sdn Bhd.

“This project will be implemented over 24 months, beginning May 24, 2024, and ending on May 23, 2026,” he told reporters at a press conference today, following the groundbreaking ceremony at Lorong Muara Tuang Park 3B in Kota Samarahan.

He further explained that the Package 1 project aims to mitigate the risk of flash flood disasters by providing a protective level of up to 20 Average Recurrence Interval (ARI).

“The federal government is confident that the PLSB Sungai Sarawak Package 1 will be completed in time to address the issue of flash floods in the areas surrounding Muara Tuang Park, Taman Univista and Unisquare, as well as Tabuan Dayak,” he added.

The Stakan assemblyman also mentioned that while the project falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government, it is being carried out by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak. — DayakDaily
