MARUDI, May 2: The Marudi bridge project, which spans the Batang Baram near here, was formerly a sick project but is now reportedly two per cent ahead of schedule since a rescue contractor was appointed.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the new contractor, Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Sdn Bhd, has also pledged to complete the 650-metre long two-lane single carriageway bridge costing RM116.5 million by October 2025.

“This happened after the government decided to terminate the original contractor and appointed a rescue contractor who took over the construction in October 2022.

“The company too had given the same commitment on its completion to our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg when he visited Marudi town recently as well as Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil who has waited for a long time for its completion,” he told reporters after visiting the construction site to check on progress today.

Uggah, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, expressed confidence the company would be able to deliver based on the machinery and workers on site.

“Today, we have seen progress and we are all very pleased. You can see the difference.

“I think a year ago when we visited the site, there was almost no activity taking place. Now we are back on track and we can see many activities and work being done,” he said.

According to Public Works Department (JKR), this project is two per cent or 12 days ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, Uggah who was accompanied by his Deputy Minister Datuk Majang Renggi and Dr Penguang advised the contractor to take full advantage of the current hot and dry weather to proceed with work. — DayakDaily
