KUCHING, March 20: The construction of the RM112.9 million access road to the southern area of Kuching International Airport (KIA) is facing delays pending approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap revealed during a site visit this morning.
According to a press release, the project involves constructing a road alignment that will provide access from Stampin Baru, Kuching, to Bukit Berangan, Kota Samarahan. This alignment must pass through a critical area near the KIA Runway 25 precision approach.
“The visit was arranged by Yap due to a technical issue regarding the positioning and height of the proposed approach lighting design, which is affecting the completion of the project. The revised completion date is 28 June 2025.
“Yap was informed by the Public Works Department (JKR) that the project is currently slightly behind schedule due to pending approval from CAAM for the revised design drawings and safety assessment.
“These revisions were necessitated by changes to the initial underpass design. The new approval from CAAM is required to ensure that the construction of the access road does not interfere with the airport’s navigation systems or safety protocols,” stated the press release.
Yap had urged the contractor and JKR to expedite the approval process with CAAM and to accelerate construction works without compromising the safety of all stakeholders.
“Yap also assured road users that he will continue to monitor the project’s progress closely and will regularly request updates from JKR and the contractor to ensure that the project is completed on or before the revised completion date, so that its benefits can be enjoyed by all road users residing in the area,” it said. — DayakDaily
