Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, expressed satisfaction with the projects’ progress, noting that construction is moving ahead of schedule.

“Collectively, these projects involve the construction and improvement of 3,843.6 metres of drainage systems,” he said in a statement today.

According to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, the drainage system at Lorong Desa Wira 17B1 and 17B2 is 53.21 per cent complete, ahead of the 52.06 per cent target.

Work on Lorong Desa Wira 17B3 and 17B4 has reached 58.45 per cent, surpassing the 52.10 per cent benchmark. Similarly, Lorong Desa Wira 17A6 has achieved 43.89 per cent completion, slightly above the target of 42.93 per cent.

“Addressing drainage issues is a continuous process, particularly with increasing rainfall and surrounding development. The Sarawak government consistently explores and implements solutions to mitigate flood risks,” Dr Sim emphasised.

Additionally, as part of Desa Wira’s drainage and flash flood mitigation plan, a RM20 million retention pond will be constructed in the area, complementing the drainage upgrades.

This comprehensive project, under the Sarawak government’s People’s Project initiative, is expected to take 20 months. Together with ongoing retention pond projects at MJC and Pines Square, costing over RM40 million, these efforts will contribute to flood mitigation in Batu Kawa.

Dr Sim affirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to residents’ well-being, highlighting investments in long-term infrastructure solutions to address the region’s drainage challenges. – DayakDaily
