KUCHING, Aug 15: Dog owners who neglect to ensure their pets receive the necessary anti-rabies vaccinations will now be subject to a minimum fine of RM1,000, while those who let their dogs roam unrestricted on the streets could face fines of up to RM2,500 under the regulations stipulated in the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance (VPHO) of 1999.
Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-Ficord) Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi issued this stern warning as he emphasised the gravity of the rabies threat.
The new rulings came to light after the recent designation of Marudi as the newest rabies-infected district in Sarawak. A stray dog from Kampung Narum tested positive for rabies on Aug 2, marking the 73rd area in Sarawak to be declared rabies-infected since 2017.
“We have no choice. The public must maintain vigilance. Those who are bitten by dogs must promptly seek treatment at a nearby clinic or medical facilities,” he said in a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.
Dr Rundi highlighted this after addressing a press conference held in conjunction with a courtesy visit from the Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) and Nanjing Agriculture University China at his office here today.
Meanwhile, Department of Veterinary Sarawak (DVS) Dr Adrian Susin confirmed that mass vaccination programmes would be intensified over the upcoming weekend in various locations including Miri, Sibu, Kuching and Bintulu.
A large-scale vaccination drive is scheduled for Aug 19 and 20 at the Miri public park carpark, running from 9am to 4pm.
“Pet owners should make use of this opportunity to bring their pet animals for vaccination. If attendance is not feasible, vaccinations can be obtained at DVS offices,” he advised.
So far this year, 73 dogs and five cats tested positive rabies out of 392 samples tested.
Rabies cases involving animals were detected in 14 different locations with Kuching leading the count at 31 cases, Padawan (18), Kota Samarahan (5), Tebakang (4), Lundu (3), Bau (2), and one each in Siburan, Serian, Sibu, Selangau, Mukah, Bintulu, Marudi and Lawas. — DayakDaily
