KUCHING, May 17: Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii is urging the Sarawak government and related agencies to ensure the repair and maintenance of potholed road junctions along the Sarikei section of the Pan Borneo Highway.

Expressing his frustration, Huang mentioned that he and his service centre team have lodged several complaints and even met face-to-face with the Pan Borneo Highway contractors, but to no avail.

“Not only that, I have repeatedly requested the Pan Borneo (contractors) to fix the potholes and repair all the road junctions along the Pan Borneo Highway, for example at Jalan Bulat, Jalan Stok, Jalan Kim San, Jalan Sungai Paoh, Jakar and so on.

“Oftentimes, my complaints were ignored and the contractors give various excuses not to repair or maintain the roads involved. The repair works are often postponed to an unforeseen future,” he lamented.

Highlighting the potential dangers, Huang emphasised that potholed roads without safety signs, signboards, and lighting could endanger road users and cause accidents.

“I appeal to the authorities to take immediate action in repairing and maintaining the junctions and main roads affected by the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway.

“I would also like to propose the construction of a roundabout at the Jakar intersection to make it easier for road users to enter Jakar or continue their journey to or from Sarikei,” he said when debating TYT’s speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

Additionally, Huang also urged the Sarawak government to consider constructing a new commercial wharf at Sungai Nyelong, Sarikei as the existing wharf is obsolete and can no longer support the commercial use of trucks and commodities in Sarawak.

He said the proposed new wharf will not only provide river access from Sarikei, Daro, Song, Kapit and other inland areas to Kuching, but also accelerate local economic activities. — DayakDaily
