KUCHING, Aug 16: The reopening of schools in states and regions under Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) has been postponed to Oct 3, 2021 from the original set date of Sept 1, 2021.

According to Bernama, this announcement was made by Senior Minister of Education Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin who also stated that schools in areas under Phase 1 will remain close.

For schools in areas under Phase 3, they will be allowed to fully open on Oct 3 while for schools in Phase 2 areas, only examination classes are allowed to resume.

According to Mohd Radzi, the decision was made based on the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the National Security Council (NSC). Despite the ministry working towards schools reopening on Sept 1, it is subject to risk assessment by the Health Ministry and NSC where vaccination rates and healthcare facilities were some of the determining factors considered.

On July 17, the Education Ministry had in a media statement, announced that all schools would be opened in stages for physical teaching and learning from Sept 1 onwards. — DayakDaily
