KUCHING, July 9: Remedial works to repair the backyards of four houses in Tabuan Heights damaged by a landslide last year will begin immediately, with the project expected to take six months to complete.

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan said the works will include the construction of a permanent retaining wall as part of slope stabilisation efforts, as well as backfilling of soil that was eroded from the backyards due to runoff.

The landslide, which occurred on Nov 30, 2024, caused the collapse of an existing retention wall and extensive damage to the backyards of the affected homes.

“Since the incident, multiple meetings were held with the affected house owners, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Kuching City South Council (MBKS) and other relevant agencies to find a safe and effective long-term solution,” Kho said in a statement on Tuesday (July 8).

As the repair work was not part of a planned State project, Kho noted that it took some time for DID Sarawak to secure the necessary budget for the remediation.

“From the initial construction of a temporary retention wall using geo bags, to establishing communication with residents and designing a new drainage system, the process involved many stakeholders,” she added.

Kho expressed her sincere appreciation to all parties involved, particularly DID Sarawak and Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How for their efforts in making the project a reality.

She said the project has now been officially handed over to contractors, and she, together with DID engineers, contractors, local community leaders, and councillors, were on-site last Sunday to brief the residents about the upcoming works.

See also expressed gratitude to the residents for their patience and cooperation and assured that he would monitor the works closely to ensure they are completed on time. — DayakDaily
