Record high of 11 new clusters identified in Sarawak today (Aug 18) with four in Kuching

KUCHING, Aug 18: A total of 11 new Covid-19 clusters were detected in Sarawak today — the highest recorded in a single day — to bring the total active clusters being monitored in the State to 119.

Of the 11 clusters, four were identified in Kuching with one linked to a village in Muara Tebas, three linked to workplaces involving a local government administrative centre in Jalan DBKU, a factory in Bintawa Industrial Area and food stalls at an eatery at 3rd Mile Central Park Commercial Centre.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily updates on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, reported that the Central Park Batu Tiga Cluster has 12 positive cases confirmed so far.


It involved the operators and workers of food stalls at an eatery located at Central Park Commercial Centre in 3rd Mile along Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here.

A total of 52 individuals have been screened, whereby 40 have tested negative while no lab test results are pending.

The second cluster dubbed the Jalan Tenaga Cluster which has 13 positive cases involved an agriculture processing factory located at Bintawa Industrial Area along Jalan Tenaga here.

A total of 142 individuals have been screened, whereby 129 have tested negative and no lab test results are pending.

The third cluster named the Jalan DBKU Cluster was declared after registering 15 positive cases so far. It involved the workers of a local government administrative centre located at Jalan DBKU in Petra Jaya here.

A total of 144 individuals have been screened, whereby 129 have tested negative with no lab test results pending as well.

The fourth cluster called the Kampung Muara Tebas 2 Cluster emerged with 43 positive cases so far. This community cluster involved a village at Jalan Kampung Muara Tebas along Off Jalan Sungai Bako in Petra Jaya here.

A total of 135 individuals have been screened, whereby 92 have tested negative with no lab test results pending.

All positive cases from these four clusters have been admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) as well as Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) Kuching for treatment and isolation.

Kuching aside, five clusters were declared in Serian with four involving villages and one linked to a brick factory with positive cases ranging between 34 to 65. There are also two workplace clusters identified with one in Sibu involving worker quarters of a shipping company and another in Selangau involving the worker quarters of an oil palm estate.

SDMC has also today declared the end of the Semuja Cluster in Serian, after no new local cases were reported in the past 28 days.

With that, the number of active clusters in Sarawak now stood at 119, out of which 16 clusters recorded an increase in number of infections with a total of 113 cases contributing to today’s daily caseload of 1,403.

They are the Bungey 2 Cluster which added 38 more cases, Kampung Pulo Ulo Cluster (19 cases), Jalan Akses Cluster (13 cases), new Batu 25 Jalan Kuching Serian Cluster (11 cases), new Tanjong Kibong Cluster (7 cases), Mega Suai Cluster (5 cases), new Dijih cluster (5 cases), Sungai Menok Cluster (4 cases), while Sega Cluster, Sri Aman Tembok Cluster, Kampung Kakeng Cluster registered two cases each; while the Kampung Paya Mebi Cluster, Kampung Git Cluster, Taman Indah Landeh Cluster, Jalan Lembah Hijau Cluster and Kampung Bintawa Tengah has one case each. — DayakDaily
