Radio still very relevant in rural Sarawak, says Telang Usan rep

MIRI, July 15: Despite the prevalence of information technology, the venerable radio still has a place in society especially in rural Sarawak — to disseminate information and views on issues that affect the people.

Taking RTM’s Radio Kayan channel as an example, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said it was especially useful for the listeners as they could use it to keep tabs on what was happening in their community.

“Radio is essential for the rural areas as not all of these places have telephone coverage. Hence, radio is their main communication platform to connect with one another,” he said at RTM Kayan Radio Station’s dinner at a hotel here yesterday.

On another matter, Dennis, who is also Sarawak Kayan Association president, welcomed those in the community to contact him if they were interested in conducting research, that is similar to what had been offered to the Kedayan and Jatti Meirek communities.

“Please let me know so that I can propose to the state government,” he said.

Also present at the dinner were Kayan Miri Association chairman Jeffrey Ngau Uvang and RTM Miri manager Tabat Sakai. — DayakDaily
