KUCHING, Feb 19: Rabies remains a significant public health concern that demands serious attention, aligning with the Sarawak government’s broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare system.
In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian revealed that 106 vaccination, licensing, and microchipping programmes were conducted over the past year in collaboration with local authorities.
“Through these initiatives, 8,491 dog licenses and 3,901 microchips have been issued to enhance pet control and monitoring,” he said when addressing the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG) Appreciation Ceremony at a hotel on Tuesday (Feb 18).
Dr Sim reiterated the Sarawak government’s commitment to improving the region’s healthcare system, ensuring greater efficiency and resilience.
He also underscored the importance of advocating for greater autonomy in the health sector to provide faster services and better meet the needs of the people.
Beyond healthcare, Dr Sim emphasised the government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable housing.
Since its introduction in 2022, the Housing Deposit and Repayment Assistance Scheme (HDRAS) has benefited 1,834 homeowners.
“Housing is more than just shelter; it forms the foundation of a harmonious community.
“Therefore, the ministry is dedicated to ensuring that housing developments are not only well-equipped with essential infrastructure but also contribute to the overall well-being of the people,” he said.
The event was held to recognise the dedication and contributions of ministry personnel over the past year.
Also in attendance were Deputy Public Health and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, Deputy Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee and permanent secretary to the ministry Datu Elizabeth Loh. — DayakDaily
