KUCHING, April 27: One rabies-positive case involving a stray dog has been reported at Siol Kandis, Kuching, this week (April 22-26).
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng urged pet owners to prioritise their pets’ health by bringing them to the free anti-rabies vaccination programme scheduled tomorrow (April 28) at the Community Hall next to MBKS headquarters, running from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
The campaign includes free licensing and microchipping as well as subsidised neutering at RM150 for the first 100 dog owners or until funds are depleted.
“Though only one case has been reported this week, we must not underestimate the severity of the situation, considering the potential for rabies to spread,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live today.
Highlighting the ample parking available at the Community Hall, he called on pet owners to take advantage of the convenience and ensure their animals receive their annual vaccinations.
“For pet owners who are concerned that their pet’s annual vaccination is only due one to two months away, I don’t think that is a problem. With another round of mass campaigns, this is a good opportunity to bring your pets for their vaccination,” he said.
Addressing concerns about targeted stray animal removal, Wee pointed out that such actions would solely involve animals deemed to pose a risk, and it is inevitable as enhanced efforts are necessary if Sarawak is to achieve zero rabies and fulfil obligations outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
In efforts to contain the spread of rabies, he said the Council has escalated the frequency of anti-rabies vaccination campaigns from twice to four times this year, in addition to similar programmes organised in the north city and Padawan areas.
“We also welcome those in DBKU or other council areas to bring their pets to the campaign organised in MBKS jurisdiction,” he added.
Wee also reminded pet owners that failure to vaccinate their pets against rabies may result in a fine of RM1,000. — DayakDaily
