KUCHING, Dec 7: Two rabies-positive cases were reported this week in Kampung Sui, Kota Samarahan, and Batu Kawah New Township, involving free-roaming pets.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng revealed that both cases stemmed from dog bites.
“I want to remind pet owners to ensure their pets receive annual anti-rabies vaccinations,” he emphasised during the ShallWeeTalk live session today.
He also shared a recent incident involving an elderly individual who was bitten by a dog.
“The dog had bitten two people, and the council took immediate action to remove the animal and collect samples for laboratory testing,” Wee explained.
Wee called for heightened vigilance and stressed the importance of urgent action if bitten.
“Victims should immediately wash the wound under running water for at least 15 minutes and then go to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Bite Clinic for necessary medical attention,” he advised.
He assured the public that the council would act swiftly once bite cases are reported.
“We will receive details of the incident, including where it happened and a photo of the animal, to facilitate prompt action,” he added.
He called for public cooperation in the ongoing fight to eradicate rabies, revealing that the council has requested an additional mass vaccination programme from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak, increasing the total from four to five next year.
“The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) has also provided valuable input to enhance the effectiveness of the vaccination drive,” he added. — DayakDaily
