MIRI, Aug 6: Persatuan Raban Ngepan Iban’s (RNI) sixth edition of the Keling Kumang Competition is expanding its participation throughout the Borneo archipelago.
According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), this year’s competition involves foreign participants from Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, including those coming from Labuan, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The Gala Night with the theme ‘Fashionista Kumbu’ held at Bintang Megamall, Miri, on Friday (Aug 4) was attended by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
The competition aimed to rejuvenate the Iban’s cultural heritage in the State by exhibiting their traditional costumes or customs.
For the record, there are 27 participants, with 13 vying for Kumang, Lulong and Selinggar Matahari titles, while 14 are competing for Keling, Laja and Bungai Nuing.
In addition, the winning awards for the participants involve sponsored products from local businesses, such as handicrafts, and beauty products, in addition to cash prizes totalling RM45,400.
Also present were Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, Cr Raymond Jenang, and RNI chairman Steven Abas Patrick Agus. — DayakDaily
