SIBU, March 28: The peak of Bukit Aup Jubilee Park, which was once a popular attraction here in Sibu, now reeks of the foul smell of rotten eggs, meat, and rice.
Bags of these food items, which are offerings prepared by the Iban community for their ‘miring’ rituals, were found either placed or hung at odd places at the highest peak of the 24-acre park.
The pavilion, which was specifically constructed for the rituals was dilapidated, overgrown with moss, and even missing some wooden planks.
A few pieces of the ceiling of the pavilion were also gone. Ropes were seen dangling from the wooden structure above, probably to hang more of the offering bags.
The place was unsightly and the stench was unbearable.
DayakDaily’s D’Drift 2023 team climbed to the top of Bukit Aup early this morning to investigate the matter following feedback received from a local couple currently living in Ulu Sg Merah here.
The elderly couple, who requested anonymity, said they have been going to Bukit Aup to jog almost every weekend, and they try to avoid the peak because of the stink.
They held that proper and regular clearing of the offerings should be conducted while not offending the Iban culture in order to preserve the purpose of that ‘miring’ pavilion and also the image of Bukit Aup.
“It’s really sad to see some parts of Bukit Aup (Jubilee Park) not maintained properly. This was once a really beautiful park and many families would come during the weekends or on public holidays.
“Now, it’s very quiet. Not many people come here anymore. Most of the people who want to exercise would rather go to the stadium,” said the woman.
To the Iban community, Bukit Aup is a sacred place where a deity called ‘Naga Bari’ dwells. Legend has it that Naga Bari is a beautiful maiden who can answer prayers and help the people in need. So, people pray to her for health, wealth and even children.
At the foot of the staircase down from the peak, there is also a ‘Naga Bari Pool’ which the Ibans call ‘Telaga Kumang’. The locals believe that it is where the deity would stop by and take a shower, so the pond is said to never go dry even during dry seasons.
Meanwhile, certain pavilions and tracks at Bukit Aup Jubilee Park were also discovered to be very run down, with signs scattered around to warn off joggers.
However, the children’s playground and fitness zone where the newly installed exercise equipment are placed, are fairly well-maintained. This morning, several workers employed by the council were seen there trimming trees, cutting grass and cleaning the entrance walkway. — DayakDaily
