KUCHING, Feb 22: The residents of Pulau Bruit have pledged to express their gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg by boosting the production of agricultural and marine products from the area.

In a TVS report, Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Sarawak Public Communication Unit) Datuk Abdullah Saidol relayed this to the Premier during the launching of the Muara Lassa Bridge in Daro today.

Abdullah, who is also the assemblyman for Semop, said this is the residents’ way of saying thank you to the Premier for the construction of two bridges—Muara Lassa, which is already completed, and the Batang Paloh Bridge, which is still under construction and is expected to be completed in a year.

The two bridges, he said, will connect Pulau Bruit to Daro and Tanjung Manis—which would provide a boost to the local economic scene.

“The latest data from the agriculture department shows that 1,010 smallholders are cultivating various fruit and other crops, as well as 870 paddy farmers on Pulau Bruit.

“The area of land cultivated now reaches 1,211 hectares, with more than 800 hectares of land that still has the potential to be cultivated,” he said.

He said that apart from that, the Pulau Bruit Are Fishermen’s Association (PNK) has a membership of more than 2,000, 900 of whom are active fishermen.

In this regard, he expressed his appreciation to the Premier, who approved an allocation of RM21 million to repair damaged paddy field embankments.

In addition, an application to widen the road connecting the Batang Paloh Bridge and Muara Lassa Bridge has been submitted to ensure smooth travel, as the road is expected to become increasingly congested in the future.

“With all this effort and support, the people of Pulau Bruit hope to continue to develop as a major food-producing area in Sarawak, thus improving the well-being of its residents,” he said. — DayakDaily
