KUCHING, July 13: The federal government has introduced a subsidy initiative worth RM300 for public university students to buy domestic flight tickets for routes between the Peninsula, Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan, starting August 15.
According to several news reports, this would be implemented through a credit shell in which participating airlines would issue a digital voucher worth RM300 to each eligible student to redeem for purchasing flight tickets for domestic routes.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the subsidy is only valid for the purchase of one-way and return economy class flight tickets between the students’ place of origin and place of study.
He also disclosed the initiative, which costs an estimated RM16.8 million, is expected to benefit over 56,000 public university students nationwide.
Students may use the vouchers to book flights with Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air, Firefly, and MYAirline, and they must be used by October 31, 2023.
Furthermore, Loke stated that if the ticket purchased costs less than RM300, the remaining balance of the digital voucher can be applied to the next ticket purchase.
More information will be posted on the Ministry of Transport’s website later, and students will be able to check their eligibility online.
Loke also said that if a student is not eligible, they may file an appeal with the Ministry of Higher Education through their respective universities or apply for a flight ticket subsidy on the respective airlines’ websites. — DayakDaily
