KUCHING, Mar 27: A model “Container Bus Stop” made out of recycled container has been erected near Chung Hua Primary School No 3 at Jalan Padungan.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the new bus stop has been placed side by side with a conventional one at Jalan Padungan for comparison.

“This is a sample unit that we have built for free bus service. We want to get the feedback from the people. All comments are welcome as all that we want is for the betterment of the city,” Wee told DayakDaily.

The model bus stop has been part of the free school bus service announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg last November, as an initiative to lessen parents’ burden.

To implement free bus service in Kuching, MBKS has identified 12 locations under its jurisdiction to build bus stops for free school bus service which was supposed to begin in April this year.

Wee said there is an allocation of RM20,000 for each bus stop.

For the new free school bus service bus stop at Jalan Padungan, Wee said the recycled container costs between Rm6,000 to RM7,000.  Then there was the work of refurbishment involving wielding.

“The painting job is done by JCI (Junior Chamber International). We will encourage more youth to contribute. The balance that we have, we can use to make more such kind of bus stops in the city.”

There are doors on each sides of the new container bus stop where the bus stop can be made into a semi-enclosed bus stop. It can also be closed completely by pulling down the shuttle.

Wee also disclosed that should there be any change in the routes of the free school bus service, the container bus stop may be moved to a new location. — DayakDaily
