KUCHING, Feb 18: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Batu Danau chairman David Upe hopes that the party will be allocated a seat in the State’s northern region should there be a redelineation exercise to reflect the party’s presence there.

In a press release, he said that PRS is not well-represented in the northern region, especially in Miri and Limbang.

“We have quite a substantial number of members and existing branches in Miri and Limbang itself. In Miri, for example, we have a few established branches like Senadin, Pujut, Lambir, Bekenu, Marudi, and Bukit Kota; and Batu Danau in Limbang.

“We have collaborated well with existing GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) component parties to ensure GPS win the seats contested.

“As such, in the event that the State seat redelineation exercise materialises, it is our fervent hope that a seat for us be considered by the party headquarters,” he said, adding that it is up to the party’s leadership to pursue the matter.

Meanwhile, he welcomed PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum’s announcement during the inauguration of the party’s Marudi branch last month that all party leadership positions, including the presidency, will remain open for contest at the triennial delegates conference (TDC).

“We also view this as a positive move that reflects good party democratic processes while we propel the party to move forward and remain relevant,” he said.

“Furthermore, we would also like to endorse PRS Youth Wing chief Dato Snowdan Lawan’s affirmation of the party’s commitment to fostering open contest within its leadership structure, which is a move that will encourage growth, rejuvenation and democratic engagement in PRS.

“Again, we view this as something forward-moving, a struggle each party should entail whilst sustaining and keeping the party intact simultaneously,” he said.

The press release was in response to a speech he delivered during a PRS dinner held at St Edmund Hall in Limbang on Feb 15.

The dinner was attended by 10 PRS State assemblymen and a Senator.

Datuk Majang Renggi, deputy president of PRS, attended the event to represent the president, Datuk Salang Gandum.
